چکیده
Research effort in the field of variable stiffness actuators is steadily increasing, due to their wide range of possible applications and their advantages. In literature, various control methods have been proposed, solving particular problems in human-robot and robot-environment interaction applications, in which the mechanical compliance introduced by variable stiffness actuators has been shown to be beneficial. In this work, we focus on achieving energy efficient actuation of robotic systems using variable stiffness actuators. In particular, we aim to exploit the energy storing properties of the internal elastic elements.

Mechanical Influences on the Design of Actuators with Variable Stiffness
In the 1990s compliant joint actuation was introduced to robotics with the Series Elastic Actuator [1] and the Mechanical Impedance Adjuster [2]. Such concepts provide safer human-robot interaction, can store energy and decrease force control effort [1]. In the following decades, energy efficient actuation with such concepts had high impact in mobile applications such as bipedal robots, since t...
متن کاملA Synthesis Method for Compact Nonlinear Springs with Custom Torque-Deflection Profiles and Bandwidth for Series Elastic Actuators
Historically, series elastic actuators (SEAs) used linear springs as the torque transmitting element in their drivetrains [1]. Use of linear springs requires tradeoffs between desired actuation bandwidth and measurable torque resolution. Nonlinear transmission elements overcome this limitation, enabling variable torque resolution and bandwidth through their deflection range. Many have recognize...
متن کاملAnalysis of System Dynamic Influences in Robotic Actuators with Variable Stiffness
In this paper the system dynamic influences in actuators with variable stiffness as contemporary used in robotics for safety and efficiency reasons are investigated. Therefore, different configurations of serial and parallel elasticities are modeled by dynamic equations and linearized transfer functions. The latter ones are used to identify the characteristic behavior of the different systems a...
متن کاملImplementation of a Variable Stiffness Joint Based on the Twisted String Actuators
In this paper, the modeling and the control of a variable stiffness joint actuated by a couple of twisted string actuators in antagonistic configuration is reported. The twisted string actuation system is particularly suitable for very compact and light-weight robotic devices, like artificial hands and arms, and renders a very low apparent inertia at the load side, allowing the implementation o...
متن کاملUsing Compliant Actuators in the Mechanical Design of Robots developed at the VUB
For many robotic applications the actuation is a serious problem for the mechanical design. Typically electrical motors are used with a gearbox and high gain PD control to track precisely desired trajectories. Regarding safety this is not interesting because in case of a collision the total inertia of the robot is felt. Also for energy efficiency stiff actuators are not interesting because no m...
